Anti-Wrinkle Injections

What causes wrinkles?

Skin is attached to the muscle beneath it and therefore your skin creases when your muscles move. Young skin stretches and recoils over the muscle therefore produces no wrinkles.

However, as we age our skin gets thinner, drier, less elastic, and cannot recoil and stretch the same.

Therefore because of the everyday movements of our facial muscles, such as laughing, frowning and squinting, lines and wrinkles start to form.

How does Botulinum Toxin work?

Anti-wrinkle injections are commonly referred to as the brand ‘BOTOX’. There are other brands including Azzalure and Bocouture all of which are all Botulinum Type A Toxins.

Botulinum Type A Toxin works by reducing or blocking the nerve impulses to the muscle. The muscle then becomes relaxed therefore reducing the movement of the skin that covers it.  Because of this reduced movement the wrinkles then become softer or disappear in the area that is treated.

Is treatment with Botulinum Toxin safe?

As with any medicine, the injection of Botulinum Type A may cause side effects, however the majority of patients do not have any and side effects are temporary.

The most common side effects of this treatment include, headaches, bruising, redness, pain, stinging and swelling.

Other side-effects can include eyelid drooping or local facial weakness.

All risks and complications will be discussed with you at consultation and prior to any treatment being agreed.  Botulinum Toxin should be administered by a healthcare professional with specialist training.

Gemma will provide aftercare advice designed to minimise risk and promote speedy recovery from any expected side effects.

How long do the results last?

The results usually last around 3 months, however some people may experience longer or others may experience shorter longevity from their results.

This is dependent on a variety of factors including lifestyle and genetics.

Are the results instant?

No.

A person will often start to see the effects after 3-4 days; maximum results are expected 2 weeks following the procedure.

Is the treatment painful?

Only a few injections into facial muscles using a very fine needle is required for treatment so pain is usually very minimal.
