Hyperhidrosis

Botulinum toxin can help control excessive sweating, a condition known as hyperhidrosis.

Sweating is a natural process our bodies use to cool down. This process is controlled by signals from our brain to our sweat glands. Botulinum toxin works by blocking these signals.

When botulinum toxin is injected into the area with excessive sweating, such as the underarms, it temporarily blocks the nerves that stimulate sweating. Without these signals, the sweat glands stop producing sweat, leading to a significant reduction in sweating.

What Causes Excessive Sweating?

Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, can be due to several reasons. These causes can be split into two categories:

  1. Primary Hyperhidrosis: This type is often genetic, meaning it runs in families. For most people with primary hyperhidrosis, the exact cause isn’t known.

  2. Secondary Hyperhidrosis: This type of excessive sweating is due to an underlying health condition. It can be caused by different conditions like an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), obesity, adrenal gland disorders, or Parkinson’s disease.

If you’re dealing with secondary hyperhidrosis, the best way to treat the excessive sweating is to address the root health condition. Therefore, it’s recommended to consult your GP to rule out these underlying causes before treatment with botulinum toxin.
